Today we docked in Las Palmas, another volcanic island in
the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands are part of Spain, even though they are much closer to Africa.
We didn’t take an excursion this time. I went swimming and we met a friend for lunch then we walked over to the Mall that is next to the docking area. The mall all the usual type of stores you see in a mall plus a grocery store.

On the way over, we ran into our friend, Frank, who was
going out for the second time. Bill wanted to buy another Phillips head screw
driver of a different size. Frank said he would keep an eye out for one and he
brought us back the perfect screwdriver! I called him our Personal Shopper but
Bill says he is our Guardian Angel. He is the same person who told where to buy
men’s pants and where the True Value hardware store was located in Puerto Rico.
Our guide told us yesterday that Tenerife has over 200
volcanoes. They have not had a major eruption in centuries but there was an
eruption on the seabed near a smaller island in this chain in 2011. The guide
pointed out a dormant volcano within two miles of the dock in Tenerife. You don’t notice it from the street level but
it’s obvious when viewed from a higher point.
We had dinner at a Spanish Fiesta on the pool deck. It was
decorated and all the staff wore Spanish style troubadour outfits. They served
tapas, paella, sausages, clams in the shell, suckling pig and various other
food from Spain.
There is something I have noticed about the couples on this
ship. I haven’t seen one couple where the husband is noticeably older than the
wife. Everyone seems to be about the same age as their spouse. When I went
swimming this morning, there was a vision impaired woman swimming on a tether.
She uses a white cane and it was on the lounge chair. Tonight I saw her with her
spouse.
The blind woman must like Holland America ships because we saw her on another cruise once.
Bill is reading two books, Giving by Bill Clinton and
Roving Mars.
Tomorrow, we are going to Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura,
Canaria. The excursion wasn’t my first choice but it’s the only one that can
handle scooters. If I had a choice, I would visit the Eco Museum. I would also like
to see beautiful beaches and snorkel in the lagoons. Oh, well. We are lucky to be
here doing what we can.
