2013-5-11 Mal de Mer Strikes Again

This is a sea day and we are skirting the edge of some bad weather.  The weather is not bad in this exact spot but the sea is roiling. I saw an obviously sick woman in one of the public areas and came back to the cabin to find Bill in bed. He took a sea sick pill and didn’t want lunch.

I went to a lecture about our upcoming ports and was starting to feel a little sick. So, I came back to the cabin and ate all the loose chocolate candy from the last few days. They put a chocolate on our beds every night. It just proves the truth of the Harry Potter stories that chocolate has curative properties.

The captain spoke over the PA at 1 p.m. He said a passenger asked him why the ship was moving and what we can do about it. He said the stabilizers are reducing the roll by 85%.  We would be rolling about 40 feet each way without them. He said we are heading into an area of high pressure and the movement should decrease by later this afternoon.

The captain is actually pretty funny. When we left Naples on Thursday, he said that we needed to keep a sharp lookout for small fishing boats. They come back to the harbor every evening about the time we sail out. They don’t have any running lights. If they get scared by seeing the Eurodam bear down on them, they light newspapers and wave them in the air. He said he hoped they have plenty of matches and it doesn’t rain.
