2013-5-12 Elche, Spain

Bill is feeling better so we walked around Elche/Elx today.  We wanted to see the Palm Groves because it is a World Heritage site.  We also saw the Basilica where the Mystery of Elche, a medieval sacred drama play about the Assumption of Mary is performed in August.

There was a church meeting at the time we were there and we stepped in for a minute to watch. 

Before the time of Mary, there was a goddess that was worshiped in this area.  A bust of her likeness was found by a man plowing a field. She had a headdress that reminded me of Princess Laia in Star Wars. You can see the bust in the composite picture below.
