2015-12-5 Cartagena, Spain

Cartagena is now in our rear view mirror. It’s still one of my favorite cities. This was our third visit. We got a good map and some expert advice on how to get up the hill to the castle in our scooters. And we did it! We are so proud of ourselves. When we got back to the ship we told everyone that we made it up to the top.  It was not easy but Cartagena is more scooter friendly than most places in Europe.  One of the great things about it is that all the streets are tiled.

It took us an hour and two elevators to get up to the top but it only took us five minutes to get back down. We raced down the hill on a windy road. We are like lightning going downhill.

The castle was a little bit of a disappointment. They kept us in the most accessible areas. The view is great from up there but it was so hazy this morning that the pictures look washed out. I did get up close with some artifacts and learned more about the history of Jews in this area. And I found a tame peacock that let me take many close-ups. He didn’t run off until some children ran up to look.

The round thing in this picture is the elevator we took up to the mid level of the castle. It cost two euros each. We didn't have any euros but a kind person gave us their ticket.

We saw this suit inside the castle.

This is a peacock that lives on the castle grounds.

This a plate from the time of the explorers.

A view of the mid level point at the castle is shown above. Below is a section of the Punic wall built during the Punic Wars about 200 B.C. The inhabitants were trying to defend the city from the Romans but it ultimately didn't work.
